Just take one glance at the Hill Country Mile, and you’ll see: there’s always plenty to do in Boerne on the weekends. From attending unique local festivals to antique shopping to eating a great meal, Boerne offers a wide range of options. However, what about those of us who don’t want to shell out wads of cash to have a good time?
Thankfully, Boerne has loads of free activities available to residents and visitors! We wanted to spotlight some of our favorite things options for those who want to leave the wallet at home and still have a roaring good time.
1. Cibolo Nature Center
The Cibolo Nature Center (or CNC for short) is constantly putting on clever, free events for the public. Since the CNC is donation-based, the organization is able to host fun, innovative events for the family each week like Art in the Park, A Thirst for Nature: Tinctures and Tonics, and Lavender and Leather - all of which are educational!
2. Library Events
The Patrick Heath Public Library hosts events on a daily basis, providing students and adults with plenty to do. There are loads of events catered toward children, like French cooking classes, robotics, fitness and exercise classes, story time, language clubs, ballet, and more! Adult classes include health and fitness education, language classes, book clubs, and other similar events.
3. Boerne City Park
Boerne City Park is the town’s largest park and is a favorite spot for locals. It has facilities like a tennis court, baseball field, softball field, and soccer field to accommodate athletes who need a place to host their games. This 125-acre park has playgrounds for kids, picnic tables and pavilions for a community gathering, and plenty of trails to hike around Cibolo Creek and take in the beautiful landscape of the Texas Hill Country.
4. Movie in the Park
The City of Boerne hosts occasional "Movie in the Park" nights on Fridays, free of charge for anyone who would like to attend! Bring a lawn chair and meet your neighbors while you all watch a family-friendly film together. The schedule of times and locations can be found here.
5. Kuhlmann-King Historic House
Get a little history of the town free of charge at the Kuhlmann-King Historic House. This was a historic home that dates back to the 1880’s, built by a German immigrant who set his roots in Boerne. A little perspective on the past can help guide us into the future as a community!
6. Boerne Skatepark
Skateboarding is super fun, and one of the most popular sports among teenagers. The Boerne Skatepark is a street-influenced plaza-style park perfect for skaters looking for a place to ride. It is considered one of the most “real street” skateparks in Texas!
There are plenty of places hosting shows featuring local artists and touring acts around Boerne that do not charge a cover to see the band. Drink Texas Biergarten is one of those, and if you can avoid the delicious craft beer on draft (we don’t blame you if you can’t help it), then you could say this checks out to be a free event as well.
8. Boerne Family Fish
Here is an event that is one day only but too fun not to list: the first Saturday in June is “Fish Without a License Day” in the State of Texas. Boerne City Lake Park is hosting Boerne Family Fish, a child/adult team fishing tournament. This event will provide a fun environment in which to introduce novice fishers to the process (without having to go through the licensing process!).
