People love Boerne for the small town atmosphere, Hill Country views, and quaint downtown. However, Boerne also has far more to offer visitors and residents alike than many realize! Boerne is known for rich heritage, great location, and an active community, all of which are showcased by local businesses. No need to research, five of the best fun events to attend and businesses to visit in Boerne this week are described below. Hopefully this list will make planning a perfect Texas Hill Country weekend a little easier!
1. Get your vintage on at an antique show
Despite our culture’s increasing obsession with up-and-coming technology and modernity, we absolutely love old stuff...especially in Texas. And how could we not? Besides being unique, classic, and absolutely charming, antiques remind us of a simpler time. From vintage postcards to restored furniture, these pieces of the past have an element of romance that we just can’t stay away from. If you cherish this same love of antiques and you’re anywhere close to Boerne, you can’t miss the 36th Annual Boerne Hill Country Antiques Show! This specialty market is a literal treasure trove, featuring over sixty booths and vendors. As a nationally acclaimed antique show, this event is sure to draw collectors from all over Texas. You won’t find any fakes or replicas here...only authentic furniture, baskets, stoneware, glassware, jewelry, textiles, paper goods, toys, silver, and Southwestern goods, to name just a few! Don’t miss this specialty event in Boerne’s own backyard.
When: Saturday (10:00am-5:00pm) - Sunday (10:00am - 4:00pm)
Where: Kendall County Fairgrounds, TX 46 East
2. Treat the kids to a “Friday Flick” at the library
While most public libraries seem to exist solely for the purpose of reading and renting books, Boerne’s Patrick Heath Public Library is no ordinary facility. This building hosts multiple clubs, gatherings, and events every week! This week, the library will host their monthly ”Fourth Friday Flick”, featuring a screening of Pixar’s Inside out! If you haven’t seen this already-classic Pixar film yet, you can’t miss it. Acclaimed by adults and kids alike have, Inside Out will literally take you on a roller coaster of emotions. Featuring the voices of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, and Mindy Kaling, Inside Out follows the story of a young girl named Riley, a Minnesotan who suddenly finds herself in a totally different world when her family moves to San Francisco. But this story isn’t just about Riley and her family...the audience gets a front-row seat to the crazy and often hilarious nature of Riley’s personified emotions (Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust) as they attempt to navigate some serious mishaps. Inside Out scored a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and one critic commented: “It's one of the most daunting and original ideas that Pixar has ever tackled, and they simply crushed it. Nothing but joy for ‘Inside Out’.” Needless to say, we recommend picking the kids up from school and heading straight for the library!
When: Fridays, 3:15pm
Where: Patrick Heath Public Library, 451 N. Main Street
3. Channel your inner FIFA fan and support your local soccer team
Boerne is certainly a town that prefers locality and values a sense of community. From supporting local shops and restaurants to knowing the names of your neighbors, Boerne keeps that “small town charm” so rarely found today. We can’t think of a better way to support your Boerne community than by attending a local sporting event! Whether you have kids in school or not, cheering on Boerne Greyhounds can be called one of the city’s most beloved pastimes. This weekend, we recommend attending the Boerne High School Varsity Boy’s Soccer game.
Boerne High School’s athletic department has experienced tremendous success in the last decade, led by A.D. and Head Basketball Coach Stan Leech. The football, baseball, soccer, basketball, cross country, tennis and softball teams have all reached regionals within the past 5 years, and the soccer program went on to win state in 2006! Celebrate the High School’s athletic success by cheering on the soccer team on Friday as they go head to head with Bandera High School!
When: Friday, 7:00pm
Where: BISD Stadium (Boerne High School), #1 Greyhound Lane
4. Enjoy a slow Saturday at a local coffee shop
It’s no secret that our culture’s pace of life isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In fact, busyness and haste have become prominent markers of our American society. From Monday through Friday, we try to work as hard as we can for as long as we can. But this kind of lifestyle isn’t really sustainable without a semblance of rest and relaxation...work hard, play hard, right? By many, Saturday mornings are revered as a sort of sanctuary from the haste and worry of the week. What better way to enjoy your slow saturday morning than by heading to a coffee shop? Enjoy a cup of high-quality joe with a flaky pastry while you read the paper, listen to music, have a conversation, or simply enjoy the morning. Below are a few of our favorite local stops:
Where: 401 S Main Street
Hours: 6am-5pm
This lovely bakery offers delicious coffee and food, from pastries to a heartier breakfast. The atmosphere contributes to its charm...right in the heart of downtown Boerne.
Where: 215 W. Bandera, Ste 115
Hours: 6am-2pm
A relatively new addition to the local coffee scene, Electric Coffee is a self-described “boutique coffee shop” that has already accrued a following! Besides high-quality coffee, Electric serves pastries, as well as a small, well-curated breakfast and lunch menu. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere is perfect for a slow Sunday morning.
