4. Upcycle Old Denim for a Cause

DIY meets philanthropy at this creative event! During Sole Hope’s Shoe Cutting Party, attendees will create shoe uppers out of old denim. Later, the completed shoes will be given out at medical clinics in Uganda. The organizer (Sole Hope) seeks to put in place preventive methods to combat diseases that enter through the feet and to create a positive physical and psychological difference in the lives of individuals in impoverished communities. Grab your old jeans and a pair of scissors and head to Patrick Heath Library on January 21st!

5. Brush Up On Yoga Basics

If your New Year’s resolution was to de-stress, learn a new skill, get fit, or all of the above, head to a beginner’s yoga workshop by The Yoga House! Relaxed and informal, this comprehensive, month-long workshop will teach beginners all the essentials necessary to start (or restart) your yoga practice. The class will focus on increased flexibility and stability, improved balance and posture, strength, endurance, focus, and overall well-being. No previous yoga experience necessary!

Libraries may be associated with the art of reading, but Patrick Heath Public Library is adding fine art to its collection as well! Stop in during the month of January to see artist Reg Bell’s artwork on display. Reg Bell has loved art since the age of five, but didn’t begin professionally pursuing his art until after he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 55. Now residing and creating in Oregon, Bell continues to create beautiful, award-winning pieces using colored pencils...despite being color blind!

Both French Conversations and Spanish Conversations will be available to respective speakers on alternating Thursdays at the Patrick Heath Public Library. Whether you’re a novice linguist or expert speaker, these bi-monthly meetings will be a great place to learn and hone your skills. Spanish will take place on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month, while French will take up the 2nd and 4th Thursday.

10. Let the Kids Discover Ballet Basics...Free!

Didn’t get your fill of festive dessert during the holiday season? Never fear! On January 23rd, National Pie Day will give you the excuse of a lifetime to savor your favorite flavors. We recommend stocking up at Tootie Pie Co, a local Boerne gem. Ruby Lorraine “Tootie” Feagan started developing her famous pie recipes in 1985, and they’ve only gotten more delicious ever since! The shop is currently serving up seasonal flavors like Vodka Peach Pie and Whiskey Apple Pie. Besides these limited edition novelties, you can also pick up your classic favorites like buttermilk, chocolate, chocolate pecan, pecan, and apple.

This Fall, the Market is offering up a wide variety of seasonal vegetables, herbs and fruits locally grown by Hill Country farmers, as well as gourmet sauces, fresh poultry, farm fresh eggs, artisan coffee, fresh kolaches, organic personal care products, goats milk products, native potted plants, and more. So head to the Farmers Market and grab some fresh bread, hot coffee, or whatever else your heart desires on an Autumn Hill Country morning. Besides shopping, market activities include live music, gardening and cooking workshops, and children’s crafts. Bonus tip: friendly dogs are always welcome!
